What is a Primer Coats

A primer coat is a layer of paint applied to prepare a freshly sanded piece of wood for further staining and finishing. Proper application of primer coatings ensure the smoothest top finishing coat possible from further stains. The purpose of the primer is to help the stain / paint adhere to the cabinet.

There are many types of primer coats available, some requiring mixing and some are ready to apply right out of the container. Primer coats are especially useful on porous surfaces since they help to create a smooth appearance that can absorb paint or stain evenly. With so many different types of primers manufactured, it is important that you find the product that is right for the specific needs of the project at hand.
