What is a Soffit

An interior soffit is a ceiling or wall structure that is framed out and drywalled over to cover wiring, piping or mechanicals. In a kitchen, a soffit could also be built to fill the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling. In that case, it may not necessarily be covering up electrical, plumbing or mechanical materials but built more from aesthetic purposes. On the exterior of your home, the soffit refers to the area between the outer edge of your roof and the siding. But on the interior of your home, it refers to the areas of your wall or ceiling that are built out or dropped to allow for other objects to transfer through an enclosed area.
