What is a Dado?

A dado is a cabinetry joint well known for its high levels of strength and functionality. They're generally used in the creation of bookshelves or cabinetry and are ideal for furnishings designed to hold weight. Dado joints are created by cutting a groove into a piece of wood that is then filled tightly by a second piece of wood, forming a rail that is often used to separate disparate design elements within a room. Dado joints are also sometimes referred to as chair rails, especially when used as horizontal support across the bottom of a wall.
