Although stainless steel appliances are still a popular option for modern-day kitchen designs, the new go-to for 2020 will be paneled appliances. To create this paneled look, “panel ready” appliances are installed, which allows a custom paneled face to be fitted to the front of the appliance. This paneled front can be purchased from a manufacturer or custom made to match the surrounding cabinets.
Typically, panels are installed on the refrigerator and dishwasher, as these are the appliances with the most front-facing space. Paneled appliances bring a more high-end feel to a kitchen and allow the homeowner more flexibility to personalize the design. They also create a cohesive flow between the cabinets and appliances. This new technique to “disguise” appliances with panels encourages the viewer to focus more on the craftsmanship of the cabinets as well as other kitchen finishes like the countertops and floors. Plus, you can (thankfully) say goodbye to the unsightly smudges that are common to stainless steel finishes.
Living Stone Construction
With the continuation of the environmentalist movement in 2020, we’ll be seeing an increase in natural finishes and materials in kitchen design. Reclaimed wood, bamboo, concrete, marble, clay and natural stone will all be popping up as trending materials because they encourage sustainability and foster a feeling of earthiness in the home. These materials are also highly durable and can often be found for a cheaper cost, especially if re-purposed or recycled. One example of re-purposing natural materials is using old barn wood to create a reclaimed wood countertop. In an effort to reduce waste, many homeowners are opting for similar DIY projects in their kitchens. Recycling materials can also cut costs when it comes to optimizing a kitchen design budget.
With the huge surge of Earth-inspired design elements in the coming months, Espresso shaker cabinets will be a lucrative cabinet trend for 2020. The sleek, understated doors and rich chocolatey hue are the ideal complement to natural kitchen design. There is an undeniable comfort in the familiar feeling of Earth’s raw elements, especially in a highly-frequented area like the kitchen. Pair Espresso cabinets with a natural wood accent (like the dining table pictured above) for a refreshing addition to your 2020 kitchen remodel.

Although the traditional bright white kitchen has not lost its charm, homeowners and interior designers are beginning to stray from this popular color scheme. In place of monochrome, 2020 will see an influx of unique accent colors that bring vibrancy to the kitchen (like the cheery white and blue kitchen shown above). Additionally, there will be an increase in muted, natural tones that evoke the feeling of nature—think shades of green, deep blues and rusty reds. The most popular kitchen paint colors for 2020 will be pale pinks like First Light, rich greys like Oxford Gray, and variations of the warm and natural Cavern Clay (pictured below).
Whether these colors adorn the wall, the cabinets or some other finish in the kitchen, they will bring a chic, updated style to the design that stands apart from the traditional monochrome look. We’re excited to see the spread of new, bold colors in kitchens this upcoming year.
The best kitchen cabinets for 2020 will be an ode to minimalism: the classic Shaker style. A reduction of visual clutter and an emphasis on clean lines has brought rise to the minimalist movement in home design. Shaker cabinetry fits this style flawlessly with a simple 5-piece door frame and lack of ornamentation. In fact, the Shaker cabinet style was originally designed with functionality in mind—the Shakers of the 1800’s believed in a no-frills approach to furniture design. Instead, they emphasized superior craftsmanship and a focus on the necessities of life. This trend has made a full circle in history to once again find its place in 2020. In today’s fast-paced world, homeowners need a space devoid of material clutter to re-ground themselves. Shaker cabinetry in a minimalist kitchen is the perfect way to create such a space.
Similar to previous years, popular colors for Shaker cabinets in 2020 will be white, gray, black, espresso and beige-y neutrals. However, there will be an increase in mixing and matching, as color trends have shifted to invite the look of contrast. The classic black and white combo will be ever-popular, especially when paired with high-end hardware in chrome and silver. Another combination that’s making a design comeback is natural wood cabinets paired with white finishes (think laid back country kitchen, example below). However, regardless of color, the Shaker cabinet style is guaranteed to be a timeless choice for 2020 and beyond.
Matte countertops continue to grow in popularity as new homeowners search for the best countertop materials to suit their kitchens in 2020. Matte quartz and honed granite countertops bring a contemporary look to any kitchen style, from rustic to modern. Matte countertops offer a softer, more natural look than polished. The result is a more casual style that still enhances the grandeur and character of the natural stone.

Matte quartz has also become popular because it can pass as concrete, bringing an industrial vibe to the kitchen surface. This quartz kitchen countertop by designer Sarah Langtry is soft grey with a matte finish. It looks just like concrete, and feels calm and cool paired with white shaker cabinets and matte black hardware. Other trending colors in matte countertops for 2020 are black, white, and marbled grey and white.
In 2020 there will be a departure from traditional subway tile backsplash in favor of more unique, modern backsplash designs. Herringbone and hexagon (honeycomb) tiles will increase dramatically in popularity, along with natural stone backsplash. Additionally, unique colors of backsplash tiles will hit the design scene with a bang as homeowners look to add more accent colors to their homes.

Essentially, backsplash patterns will be breaking the mold of what has traditionally been used in kitchens for the past 50 years. As homeowners and designers alike yearn to express more personal taste in their homes, the diversity of backsplash options will continue to expand. Those who aren’t willing to fully commit to a unique backsplash pattern may opt for peel-and-stick backsplash, which can be easily removed when it’s time for a change.

Open shelving was popularized by the show Fixer Upper on HGTV and is unarguably here to stay. Many homeowners are choosing to add floating shelves to their existing cabinet designs for extra storage space or to display trendy decor. The great thing about open shelving is that it’s cheap and easy to customize. Plus, open shelves can be painted or stained to perfectly match the color of the surrounding cabinets. If you’ve been looking for an affordable storage solution for 2020, floating shelves may be your answer.

The House Of Silver Lining
Matte black range hoods are a chic, timeless style for modern kitchen designs. Expect to see a lot more of these as homeowners begin to shy away from the all-white kitchen and turn to the dark side—because black is the new black. This kitchen from The House Of Silver Lining features a stark black range hood to match black shaker cabinets, plus the added detail of horizontal paneling on the range as an added modern design statement.
Another upcoming trend for range hoods is reclaimed wood. This gorgeous range hood is reclaimed White Oak with a clear, matte sealant. Reclaimed wood range hoods can be found from a variety of manufacturers, or made custom. As natural materials continue to trend throughout 2019 and into 2020, adding a wooden range hood to your kitchen design will surely be a big hit.
