Step 2: Join the Side Panels to the Bottom

Stand the two side panels up, slot the bottom panel between them, and seat the joints with the mallet. This forms a U — the structural core of the cabinet — and everything after this squares against it.

Step 3: Square the Box, Then Fit the Back

Measure both diagonals of the open box. When the two measurements match, the box is square. Fix the back panel at that point — the back is what locks squareness in permanently.

This is the step that decides whether the finished kitchen looks built or looks assembled, and it is the step most first-timers rush. A cabinet can be a quarter-inch out of square and sit perfectly happily on the floor. You will not see it. You will see it the moment two of those cabinets are side by side on a wall and their doors do not line up.

Step 5: Shelves, Drawer Boxes and Hardware

Install shelf pins and shelves, then any drawer glides, then the drawer boxes. Doing hardware before the doors means you can test drawer travel while the box is still easy to move.

Shelf pins go into the pre-drilled line of holes in each side panel — count the holes rather than eyeballing the height, so the shelf sits level. Adjustable shelves are meant to be adjustable; leave them loose until the kitchen is loaded and you know what is going where.

Drawer glides are the part where a small error compounds. Under-mount soft-close glides in particular need to be mounted at matching depths on both sides, or the drawer front will sit skewed. Follow the pre-drilled positions rather than measuring your own, and test the drawer travel before moving on.

Step 6: Hang the Doors and Adjust the Hinges

Clip the hinges onto the mounting plates, then adjust. Modern concealed hinges have three independent adjustment screws — side-to-side, in-and-out (depth), and up-and-down — and every door will need at least one of them touched.

New assemblers often treat a door that sits slightly proud or slightly low as a mistake to be undone. It usually isn't. Six-way adjustable hinges exist precisely because doors need aligning after hanging, and the alignment is done on the wall, in the finished run, not on the floor.
