Standard Bathroom Vanity Height (and Comfort Height) Explained

Standard Bathroom Vanity Height (and Comfort Height) Explained
What is the standard height of a bathroom vanity?

Bathroom vanity height is measured from the floor to the top of the counter. Traditional vanities are usually 30 to 32 inches tall, and comfort height vanities are 34 to 36 inches. Lily Ann's vanity cabinets are 34-1/2 inches tall before the top; with a 1-3/16-inch (3cm) quartz top, the finished counter sits at about 35-3/4 inches, comfort height.

  • Vanity height is floor to top of counter. Traditional vanities are usually 30 to 32 inches; comfort height is 34 to 36 inches.
  • Every Lily Ann vanity cabinet we checked is 34-1/2 inches high and 21 inches deep, from a 12-inch drawer base to a 42-inch sink base.
  • Add the top: Lily Ann's quartz vanity tops are 1-3/16 inches (3cm) thick, so the finished counter is about 35-3/4 inches, comfort height.
  • Vessel sinks sit higher. The bowl adds its own height above the counter; undermount sinks don't.
  • ADA maximum is 34 inches to the higher of the rim or counter (2010 ADA Standards, 606.3), so a standard floor-mounted vanity with a top is too tall for it.
  • Floating vanities go at the height you pick. Subtract the top thickness from your target counter height.
  • Lily Ann's vanity modifications change depth (12 to 21 inches), not height.

Standard vs Comfort Height: The Numbers

Vanity height is measured from the finished floor to the top of the countertop. Older "standard" vanities are usually described as 30 to 32 inches tall, and today's "comfort height" vanities as 34 to 36 inches.

Those two ranges are how Google's own search summary and most vanity height guides describe it (checked September 14, 2026). The table puts them next to the one hard rule, from the ADA, and next to Lily Ann's own vanity cabinets.

So the short version: a Lily Ann vanity is a comfort height vanity, close to kitchen counter height.

How Tall Are Lily Ann Bathroom Vanities?

Every Lily Ann vanity base cabinet we checked is 34-1/2 inches high and 21 inches deep, whatever its width. That is the cabinet box alone, before the countertop goes on:

The Colorado White Shaker vanity collection lists its 24, 27, 30 and 36-inch sink bases and its 12, 15, 18 and 24-inch drawer bases all at 34-1/2 inches high. Only the width changes. The tall piece in the set, the vanity linen cabinet, is 80 inches high and the same 21 inches deep.

Add the Countertop

Lily Ann's quartz vanity tops, such as the Aries quartz top, 37 x 22 inches and the Carrara White quartz top, 49 x 22 inches, list a top thickness of 1-3/16 inches (3cm), an undermount sink and an included backsplash. (Both tops showed as out of stock on Sep 14, 2026, but the specs still apply to any 3cm top.) The Aries 37 x 22 top is listed to fit a 36 x 21-inch vanity, so it overhangs the cabinet a little at the front and sides.

The math for the finished height:

  • 34-1/2 inches (cabinet) + 1-3/16 inches (3cm top) = 35-11/16 inches, just under 35-3/4 inches.
  • With a thinner or thicker top, swap in that top's thickness. A top from another supplier will list its own.

How to Measure Bathroom Vanity Height

  1. Measure from the finished floor. If tile is still to go down, add its thickness, because the vanity will sit on top of it.
  2. Measure to the top of the counter, not the cabinet. Cabinet height + countertop thickness = vanity height.
  3. Check the sink type. An undermount sink, like the one in Lily Ann's quartz tops, sits under the counter, so the counter is the highest point. A vessel sink sits on top of the counter, so the rim ends up higher by the height of the bowl. Look up that bowl height in the sink maker's specs.
  4. Stand where you'll use it. Your kitchen counter, at about 35 to 36 inches, is a quick test: if washing your hands there feels right, a comfort height vanity will too.
  5. Check the mirror, lights and outlets above. A taller vanity and backsplash raise everything that sits above the counter, so check them against your plan before you order.

Which Vanity Height Is Right for Your Bathroom?

There is no single right number. It depends on who uses the room most:

BathroomWhat to think aboutHeight to consider
Primary bathroom for adultsLess bending at the sink every dayComfort height, 34 to 36 in.
Shared family bathroomAdults and children at one sinkComfort height, plus a sturdy step stool for small children
Children's bathroomKids grow; the vanity staysLower heights suit young children, but plan for when they're taller
Vessel sinkThe bowl adds height above the counterCount the bowl height before choosing the cabinet
Accessible bathroomWheelchair users need knee space and a lower counter34 in. maximum under the ADA Standards (see below)

If two people of very different heights share one bathroom, a double vanity does not solve it on its own: Lily Ann's vanity bases are the same 34-1/2 inches high at every width. What changes the height is the countertop, the sink type, or how the vanity is mounted.

ADA Bathroom Vanity Height

The ADA sets a maximum, not a standard. Section 606.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design says lavatories and sinks shall be installed with the front of the higher of the rim or counter surface 34 inches maximum above the finished floor. The same standards also set knee and toe clearance under the sink, which this article doesn't cover. For the toilet, section 604.4 sets a seat height of 17 to 19 inches; see how tall a toilet should be for how that compares with a standard toilet.

Two things follow from that:

  • A Lily Ann vanity installed on the floor with a 3cm top finishes at about 35-11/16 inches, which is above the 34-inch maximum. It is not an ADA-height vanity as installed that way.
  • The ADA Standards apply to the places the ADA covers. For a private home, check your local building code or ask your contractor what applies.

Floating Vanity Height

A floating vanity hangs on the wall, so its height is set when it's installed rather than by the cabinet. Work backward from the counter height you want: subtract the countertop thickness, and that is where the top of the cabinet box goes on the wall.

Lily Ann doesn't sell a separate floating vanity line. Our floating bathroom vanity ideas article explains that any of our vanity cabinet lines can be wall-mounted by a qualified installer, and that the cabinet must be anchored into studs or solid blocking, never drywall alone. For the pros and cons of hanging one at all, see floating vs freestanding vanities.

Can You Change a Vanity's Height?

Lily Ann's listed vanity modifications change depth, not height. The Reduce Vanity with Fixed Drawer Front and Reduce Vanity with 1 or More Drawers options both reduce a vanity to a depth of 12 to 21 inches. If your problem is a narrow bathroom rather than the height, those are worth a look.

For height, the choices are the ones above: a different countertop thickness, an undermount instead of a vessel sink, or a wall-mounted installation at the height you pick. Widths and depths of every size are in our bathroom vanity sizes guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is 36 inches too tall for a bathroom vanity?
Not usually: 36 inches is the top of the comfort height range that most vanity height guides describe, and it is close to kitchen counter height (about 35 to 36 inches). It can feel high for children or shorter adults, and a vessel sink on top raises the rim further. A Lily Ann vanity cabinet with a 3cm quartz top finishes at about 35-3/4 inches.
2. Why are bathroom vanities so tall now?
Vanity height guides tie the change to comfort: a taller counter means less bending over the sink for most adults. Google's own search summary describes comfort height as matching the height of kitchen counters. Lily Ann's vanity cabinets use the same 34-1/2-inch box height as its kitchen base cabinets.
3. What are common mistakes with vanity height?
The most common one is forgetting the countertop: the cabinet height is not the vanity height. Others are measuring from the subfloor before tile goes down, forgetting that a vessel sink adds its bowl height above the counter, and assuming a standard floor-mounted vanity meets the ADA's 34-inch maximum. Measure from the finished floor to the top of the counter, with the sink you plan to use.
4. What is the most comfortable vanity height?
It depends on who uses the vanity, so there is no single number. Many adults find comfort height, 34 to 36 inches, easier on the back, while young children may need a step stool at that height. A quick test is your kitchen counter at about 35 to 36 inches: if washing your hands there feels right, comfort height will too.
5. What is the comfort height of a bathroom vanity?
Comfort height usually means 34 to 36 inches from the floor to the top of the counter. Lily Ann's vanity cabinets are 34-1/2 inches tall before the top, and its quartz tops are 1-3/16 inches (3cm) thick, which puts the finished counter at about 35-3/4 inches.
6. How high should a bathroom vanity sit?
Choose the finished counter height first, usually 30 to 32 inches for traditional height or 34 to 36 inches for comfort height, measured from the finished floor. A floor-mounted vanity's height is set by its cabinet plus the countertop. A wall-mounted vanity can sit wherever you choose, so subtract the countertop thickness from your target to find where the top of the cabinet goes.
7. What is the new standard height for a bathroom vanity?
Comfort height, 34 to 36 inches, is increasingly treated as the modern standard. Google's own summary for `standard bathroom vanity height` calls it the modern standard. Lily Ann's vanity cabinets are built to that range: 34-1/2 inches before the countertop.
8. Comfort height or regular height for a bathroom vanity?
Choose comfort height for bathrooms used mostly by adults, and consider a lower height where young children or shorter adults use the sink most. Remember to add the countertop, and a vessel sink's bowl, to the cabinet height. Lily Ann's vanities are comfort height, 34-1/2 inches before the top.
9. Can a bathroom vanity be installed higher than 30 inches?
Yes. Comfort height vanities are 34 to 36 inches, and Lily Ann's vanity cabinets alone are 34-1/2 inches tall. A wall-mounted vanity can also be hung at the height you choose, as long as it is anchored into studs or solid blocking. Just check that the plumbing, mirror and outlets still line up.
10. How high should a floating vanity be?
A floating vanity is as high as you mount it, so pick the counter height first. For comfort height that's 34 to 36 inches to the top of the counter; subtract your countertop's thickness to find where the top of the cabinet goes. Have the installer anchor it into studs or blocking.
11. What is the height of a double bathroom vanity?
A double vanity is usually the same height as a single one; it is wider, not taller. Lily Ann's vanity sink bases are listed at 34-1/2 inches high from the 24-inch to the 42-inch width. The finished height depends on the countertop you put on top.
12. Is there a building code for bathroom vanity height?
The clearest rule is the ADA: section 606.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design sets a 34-inch maximum to the higher of the sink rim or counter surface. It applies to places the ADA covers. For a private home, check your local building code or ask your contractor; this article doesn't quote a residential code.
